Leg strength test

The 30-second chair stand test measures lower limb strength, which is needed to climb stairs, walk distances, get out of a chair, bathtub or car, and rise from lying down. Lower body strength also helps reduce the risk of balance problems and falls. To complete this simple test you will need to have a sturdy chair, ideally against a wall to prevent it moving, and a watch or timer.

  1. Sit in the middle of the chair with you back straight
  2. Put your feet flat on the floor
  3. Have your arms folded across your chest
  4. On your signal of ‘go’ rise to a full stand, then sit down fully again
  5. Repeat this movement as many times as you can within 30 seconds
