Looking after your feet is important. Problems such as calluses, long toe nails, poor circulation or loss of feeling can make you unsteady on your feet, as well as cause pain and discomfort. The footwear you choose can also affect your walking and your balance.
Do you have any problems with your feet such as pain, swelling or numbness?

If you have problems with your feet, it may cause you to walk in an awkward way which could cause you to trip and or fall. Having painful feet may also put you off walking as much – being less active as a consequence will cause your muscles to weaken and therefore increase your chances of tripping or falling.
Pain, swelling or numbness in feet can be an indication of other health problems such as arthritis, problems with circulation or it can be related to diabetes.
What can I do to help?
Care for and check your feet regularly
Wear appropriate footwear for the activity you’re doing
If you have painful feet don’t ignore it
If you are worried about your feet contact your GP, podiatrist or chiropodist
Wear shoes or slippers that fit you properly. This will help you move around more safely and comfortably

Walking around the house in just socks (which can cause you to slip) or bare feet (you’re feet won’t be supported) can increase the risk of falling.
What can I do to help?
Wear shoes or slippers that fit you properly, provide good support for your feet and are in good condition
Make sure that your footwear is properly fastened – securely and comfortably
It is a good idea to wear shoes in the house during the day because they give your feet more support than slippers
If you are going out make sure your footwear is appropriate for where you are going and the weather. High heels, narrow heels and backless shoes or sandals can all increase your chances of tripping and falling
If you wear insoles or splints check that they are still right for you. If you have not had these checked in a while, speak to your GP or hospital department where you got them from
